Mixed Martial Arts or more commonly known as MMA, is a combat sport that utilizes both striking and grappling techniques from any category or type of martial arts.
Some of the more common fighting styles used in MMA are:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu – A form of ground fighting style that places emphasis on positioning, chokes and joint locks.
Judo – Utilizes knowledge of ground grappling and stand-up grappling.
Karate – Primarily is a form of stand up or striking martial art. It utilizes the striking art through punching, kicking, kneeing and elbow striking.
Kickboxing –Stand-up combat that is centered on kicking and punching for self-defence or for contact sports
Muay Thai – Similar to boxing and various styles of kickboxing, muay thai is a strong basis for striking in MMA. The style is predominantly a stand-up game and utilizes limb strikes, (legs, knees, elbows and fists).
Taekwondo – stand-up or striking style of martial arts, with a huge focus on kicking techniques. It uses combat techniques and self-defense, training usually involves a system of blocks, kicks, punches and open hand strikes as well as including various takedowns, sweeps, throws and joint locks
Wrestling – Includes grappling type techniques like clinch fighting, throws, takedowns, joint locks, pins and various grappling holds.
And although these are more fighting styles than just the ones listed, there are no limitations or restrictions as to which martial arts one can use in MMA. It is literally ‘mixed martial arts’ meaning one can use whatever combination of fighting styles they wish in order to submit their opponent. These fighting styles must however remain within the legal restrictions of the sport.
