Toronto Zombie Walk 2014, day of the undead

By: Rebecca Alberico

One night a year, the living dead rise from their graves to march around Toronto in search of fresh brains – you wish we were joking.

A week before hallows eve thousands of people congregate in Nathan Philips Square in full zombie garb to celebrate the post-apocalyptic phenomenon.

After zombie-themed musical performances and a stroll through the various themed vendors, costume contests are in full swing.

Judges call all willing participants to the stage to show off their DEADicated costumes. Prizes are won for best overall and most creative costumes.

Zombie clowns, zombie Disney characters, scary limbless zombies – the creativity is limitless.

And then they’re off; zombies exit the square and roam the streets of the city – scaring any unsuspecting mortals.

The 2014 Toronto Zombie Walk had nearly 10,000 people in attendance, and saw the addition of a pre-walk parade.

The undead come in all shapes and sizes, with countless zombie families in attendance.

“The kids look forward to the Zombie Walk all year long – they’ll start planning their costumes tomorrow for next year’s [walk],” said Sharon, who attended the walk with her husband and twin boys for the third time.

Spirits are high but personas are focused and spot-on, as the gruesome zombies stay in character nearly the entire time.

Year-round planning, organizing, coordinating, fundraising, promotion and decision-making responsibilities are performed by the TZW Board of Directors and Committee.
The walk has become so popular; New York, Vancouver, Ottawa and Melbourne have joined the movement.
